On August 14, 1963, the late president Chiang Kai Shek, in presiding the kuomintang(KMT) eighth central executive assembly of the 463rd meeting, had motioned to form a “The Preparatory Group of Commemorating Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Centennial Birthday” in Nov.12, 1965 the organization taskforce moved to conclude five commemorative measures, and a premiere of which had been to build a “Commemorative memorial hall”.
1964
On September 1, 1964, "The Preparatory committee of Dr. Sun's Centenniel Birthday" was formed, concluding the construction of a “Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall”; on Nov. 12, 1965, the late president Chiang Kai Shek presided the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall’s foundation laying ceremonies.
1966
In January 1966, The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall development council took over the building work by staging open solicitation for architectural drawings, in which the architect Wang Da-ming’s design drawings were chosen. On March 12, 1968, the construction work formally broke ground, commencing the construction work of the main hall structure.
1972
“Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall development council” commissioner Mr. Wang Yun-wu presided the memorial hall’s inaugural ribbon-cutting ceremony.
On May 16, 1972, a completion ceremony marking the completion of main structure was held, as presented by development council commissioner Mr. Wang Yun-wu on behalf of the government, and accepted by then vice president and Executive Yuan speaker Mr. Yen Jia-gan.
On Sept. 5, 1972, the “Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall administration office” was founded, with Mr. Shih Jun-wen appointed by the Taipei Municipal Government as superintendent.
1975
On July 21, 1975, “The Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall administration office’s organization rules” were amended, and the previous management office director was revamped into director.
1978
On October 5, 1978, the director Shih Jun-wen retired, and succeeded by director Mr. Tong Chi-shiangas.
1986
On July 1, 1986, the memorial hall was revamped under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, and renamed as “National Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall”, and the head of the memorial hall was renamed as curator(director-general), merging also the Chungshan Hall administration office of Yangmingshan.
