Art for All—Bringing Aesthetics into Your City” National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Collection Exchange Exhibition – First Stop: Changhua County Art Museum

The National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, under the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Changhua County Cultural Affairs Bureau, is hosting the “Art for All—Bringing Aesthetics into Your City” collection exchange exhibition.

The exhibition runs from July 3 to August 3 at the first-floor gallery of the Changhua County Art Museum. The opening ceremony was held this morning at the first-floor art gallery, attended by distinguished guests including Changhua County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei, Memorial Hall Director Wang Lan-sheng, Cultural Affairs Bureau Director Chang Que-fen, curator Professor Gu Yao-hua from the Department of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University, Honorary Chairman of the Changhua Calligraphy Association Wu Qi-lin, Chairman of the Central Watercolor Association Lin Jun-yin, Wu Zheng-xiu from the Changhua Songbo Painting and Calligraphy Association, Chairman of the Changhua Confucian Calligraphy Association Cai Zhao-zong, Chairman of Jinde Vocational High School Lai Yao-qi, and renowned artists Lin Wei-zhen and Lin Hong-ming.

Director Wang Lan-sheng emphasized the long-standing partnership and deep ties between the Memorial Hall and Changhua. In response to the Memorial Hall’s renovation this year, the exhibition was expanded to bring treasured collections to different regions, with Changhua chosen as the first stop. The exhibition focuses on works closely connected to Changhua and central Taiwan artists, showcasing the evolution of artistic styles and local relationships over the past half-century. Through this exhibition, the Memorial Hall aims to bring art closer to communities and express gratitude to the people of Changhua. The Director also shared his personal experience learning calligraphy, highlighting that art education is a lifelong treasure. This exhibition is not only a cultural exchange but also an emotional gesture, offering a serene space for visitors to enjoy art and nourish the soul during the summer.

Changhua County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei expressed appreciation for the Memorial Hall’s continued provision of rich collections since 2020, allowing local residents to enjoy high-quality calligraphy and painting works without traveling to Taipei. This exhibition highlights award-winning works from the Memorial Hall’s long-running “National Youth Student Calligraphy and Painting Competition,” featuring artists from Changhua such as Du Zhong-gao and Wu Qi-lin. Du, an early standout, bridged calligraphy and literature, becoming a role model; Wu has excelled in both teaching and creation, playing a key role in Changhua’s calligraphy scene. Additionally, many winners of the “Sun Yat-sen Youth Art Award” hail from Changhua, reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Honorary Chairman Wu Qi-lin shared his creative journey, noting two pillars of his artistic career: participation in the Memorial Hall’s “National Youth Calligraphy and Painting Competition” and “Sun Yat-sen Youth Art Award,” evolving from contestant to judge; and involvement in the local “Huangxi Art Exhibition” since age 20, along with promoting calligraphy and managing associations. He invited the public to attend his special lecture on July 13, where he will discuss innovation versus tradition and the evolution of calligraphy styles across eras.

Curator Professor Gu Yao-hua praised the Memorial Hall as the most important art venue in northern Taiwan. This exhibition centers on artists who achieved top-three rankings in the Memorial Hall’s 38 editions of the “National Youth (Student) Calligraphy and Painting Competition.” Selected works include those awarded during the competition and later pieces acquired through other exhibitions or contests. Each artist presents at least two works spanning nearly 50 years, illustrating the growth of Taiwan’s calligraphy and painting art. By juxtaposing works from different periods, the exhibition invites viewers to appreciate the stylistic evolution and development of each artist.

The exhibition features 33 ink and calligraphy works from renowned central Taiwan artists such as Du Zhong-gao, Lin Jin-zhong, Chen Shi-hou, Xiao Shi-qiong, Lin Rong-sen, and Wu Qi-lin, strengthening local connections and evoking emotional resonance. In addition to hosting exhibitions by individuals and art groups, the Memorial Hall actively expands outreach, taking top winners of the “Sun Yat-sen Youth Art Award” to art fairs, creating platforms for young artists to connect with the market. In recent years, the Hall has organized multiple collection tours and award-winning work exhibitions, fostering inter-museum collaborations across counties and cities, and bringing rarely exhibited treasures to diverse communities—fulfilling the vision of “Art for All—Bringing Aesthetics into Different Cities.”

After concluding in Changhua on August 3, the 2025 “Art for All—Bringing Aesthetics into Your City” collection exchange exhibition will move to Kaohsiung Cultural Center from September 13 to October 7.
