To promote traditional Chinese calligraphy and enhance the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, under the Ministry of Culture, held the “Auspicious Horses Galloping into Good Fortune” Opening Brush Calligraphy Ceremony on January 31, 2026 at Zhongshan Cultural Park. The event symbolized vitality and good fortune for the coming year and marked the opening of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
The opening brush ceremony represents traditional blessings for a smooth and auspicious new year. Fourteen distinguished guests from the cultural sector jointly officiated the ceremony and wrote the Spring Festival couplet: “Welcoming Good Fortune in the Spring of the Bingwu Year; Galloping a Thousand Miles, Expanding a Grand Vision,” conveying festive joy and heartfelt wishes.
Deputy Minister of Culture Lee Ching-hui noted that Taipei’s eastern district integrates key cultural venues such as the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the National Railway Museum, Taipei Dome, and Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, forming a promising cultural hub. The Ministry of Culture aims to strengthen cultural integration so that culture becomes a defining highlight of the city.
Director Wang Lan-sheng of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall emphasized the Hall’s long-term commitment to promoting calligraphy and cultural education. Due to renovation works, this year’s event was relocated to the courtyard of the temporary office building to create closer interaction with the public.
Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tsai Shih-ping stated that calligraphy activities evoke cultural memories and demonstrate artistic depth. Through cross-venue collaboration, the city continues to integrate culture, tourism, and commerce to shape Taipei as a city rich in cultural heritage.
Since 2005, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall has held annual Lunar New Year calligraphy events, which have become a culturally significant tradition. This year’s event also featured performances by the Taiwan Chinese Orchestra and on-site calligraphy demonstrations, free Spring Festival couplet giveaways, and family-friendly DIY activities to promote calligraphy education and festive culture.
