Beauty in the Extreme—Chin-lung Huang Solo Exhibition, organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall of Ministry of Culture, will be held at Chungshan National Gallery from today to November 23. The opening ceremony was held today (Oct. 8). The distinguished guests including Minister of Culture Lee Yung-te, Legislator Chiang Yung-chang, Political Deputy Minister of Culture, Hsiao Tsung-huang, Political Deputy Minister of Examination, Lee Lung-sheng, Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, Director of National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Lin Chin-li, former Chair of Department of Fine Arts, NTNU, Wang Che-hsiung, former Director of National Museum of History, Liao Hsin-tien, Dean of College of Fine Arts, NTUA, Chen Kuang-yi, Chair of Department of Fine Arts, NTNU, Bai Shi-ming, President of Chien Hsin University of Science and Technology, Lee Ta-wei, Chairman of Chung Yuan Christian University Chang Kuan-cheng, former Vice President of National Taiwan Normal University, Chen Chiung-hua, Chairman of Paris Foundation of Art, Liao Shiou-ping, Dean of Taiwan Academy of Fine Arts, Chiang Ming-shyan, Chairman of Chinese Asia-Pacific Watercolor Association, Kuo Tsung-cheng, Chairman of Taiwan International Watercolor Association, Lin Jen-shan, and Honorary Chairman of Taiwan Watercolor Association, Lin Ren-jie attended the ceremony.
Minister of Culture Lee Yung-te attended the ceremony to pay special tribute to Prof. Huang. Besides the high achievement in the artistic creation, Prof. Huang also actively engages in public affairs, including serving as the chairman of the three major watercolor painting societies in Taiwan and as the judge of the domestic and foreign art exhibitions and painting societies. He further actively promotes the domestic and international watercolor exchanges, introducing the works of the world-known artists to Taiwan and bringing the works of Taiwanese artists to the exhibitions in the United States, Australia, and Thailand. Lee said today’s grand opening ceremony can prove that “his students are all over the world” and expressed gratitude to Prof. Huang for his outstanding contribution to artistic creation and public service.
Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, said Prof. Huang gives an impression that he is an optimistic, enterprising, and cheerful person. These positive life attitudes are also reflected in the paintings. Whenever he appreciates his works, he will feel refreshed. Prof. Huang’s passion for art can be seen in his works. The artist, Prof. Huang Chin-lung, expressed his gratitude to Ministry of Culture and National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for inviting him to hold the exhibition. He said life will have new insights with age, and the same is true of artistic creation. He has actually climbed the high mountains of Taiwan, looked into the distance in the heights, observed the changes of wind and clouds and the evaporation of mist, and experienced the infinite changes of nature in the circle of life. The creation of painting is not a fixed scene, but painting based on the perception of the whole nature. He faces many themes with the same thoughts. The opening ceremony is held on the first day of the consecutive holidays of National Day, but there are still many seniors and friends attending the ceremony. This is the greatest support and encouragement for him.
National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall said the exhibition is divided into four subjects: “High Mountains,” Broad Sea,” “The Beauty of Cherry Blossoms,” and “Flowers, Non-Flowers.” The creative topics include the magnificence and agility of the mountains and seas of Taiwan, the splendor and colorfulness of cherry blossoms, and the softness and reverie of the curves of human bodies. More than hundred watercolor and oil painting works bring the viewers a feast of western painting with Oriental lyrical beauty through the magic of colors, the rhythm of light and shadow, and the poetic brushwork and ink charm of Chinese ink art and show the artist’s free expression in “personal refinement by depicting everything in the world.”
Prof. Huang Chin-lung was born in Pingtung, Taiwan, in 1963. Receiving his Master’s Degree from Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University, he used to serve as Dean of College of Arts, NTNU. Prof. Huang painted the widely-loved works of harbor scenes with true feelings in the early years. Afterwards, he turned to give interpretations to different issues and kept thinking about the characteristics and contents of Oriental art culture and aesthetics under the flowing trend of globalization full of changes. How to present the “styles and colors” of western painting with the Chinese “writing feelings” is the theme he has kept exploring and developing in the long creative career.
Prof. Huang used to serve as Chairman of the three major watercolor painting societies, Taiwan International Watercolor Association, Chinese Asia Pacific Watercolor Association, and Taiwan Watercolor Association, promoting many watercolor exchanges at home and abroad. Commissioned by Ministry of Culture in 2015, he curated the exhibition “Brimming with Nostalgia-The Humanistic Landscape of Taiwanese and Japanese Watercolor Paintings” in Manhattan, New York. He was invited to be the international judge in the year of 2012 by American Watercolor Society. As the first Chinese judge that was invited by the society in the past 145 years, he was highly acclaimed.
Besides watercolor, Prof. Huang’s oil painting is also outstanding. The interaction between the two creates the integrated characteristic of “thickness and penetration” for the highly anticipated exhibition.
