“2022 Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards: The Exhibition” organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall of Ministry of Culture will be grandly held at Bo-ai Gallery from December 23, 2022 to January 15, 2023. A total of 52 winning works will be exhibited (13 pieces from the ink group, 26 pieces from the calligraphy group, 13 pieces from the oil painting group). The award-giving and opening ceremony was held this morning (Dec. 24).
Director-general Wang Lan-sheng of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall said “Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” has been held for seven years. This year the hall specially commissions the manufacturer to design the visual logo and continues to establish its brand image to highlight the unique value. Besides, it is also evaluated whether to increase the competition categories in the future to expand the support for artistic creation and allow more artists of various art forms to participate together. He also expressed his gratitude to Taiwan Art Gallery Association for the long-term assistance in working together to promote Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards and the artists to the art market, increase visibility, and give more substantial help to the young artists. Finally, he expressed his gratitude to the jurors who have always supported Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards. The winning works this year are quite brilliant, and there are 52 works exhibited. In his speech, the jury convener of the ink painting group, Lo Cheng-hsien, gave recognition to the dedication of Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards to establishing the brand image by making the long-term plans in details and shaping the value of supporting artistic creation to keep providing substantial and intangible support for young artists. In the past, “National Youth Students Painting and Calligraphy Competition” was a well-known art award, but it was suspended because of the business adjustment of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Afterwards, “Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” was started to encourage young people to create, and it becomes a model award for many competitions again. The innovation and diversity of the ink painting works of these years are obvious to all. The competition this year is especially fierce. The forms, contents, and styles are all refreshing. He expected the young artists to keep working hard, dare to make breakthroughs, and never give up.
In his speech, the jury convener of the calligraphy group, Hsueh Ping-nan, said the establishment of “Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” was an extension of “National Youth Students Painting and Calligraphy Competition,” which had been held by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for more than thirty years. With a focus on encouraging young people to engage in artistic creation, it has the significant meaning. There are numerous art awards in Taiwan. “Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” specially provides the young artists with a stage of competition and encourages more young people to engage in artistic creation. Among them, the participants of the calligraphy group come from diverse backgrounds such as engineering, machinery, and finance. It can be said to be a universal category of art. He expected the winners to continue to create and find their own path in artistic creation in the future.
The jury convener of the oil painting group, Chairman Su Hsien-fa, said he had attended the first “National Youth Students Painting and Calligraphy Competition” held by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in 1973, which was more than forty years ago, and won the first prize of the oil painting group for fine arts majors in college. This proves that “Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” organized by the hall is an iconic award in Taiwan and an important award to the young students in the art circle. The chairman and secretary-general of Taiwan Art Gallery Association, the leader of the art industry, are specially invited to attend the opening ceremony, which indicates that the hall not only expects “Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” to be the model of the academia but also works hard to promote art to the commercial stage. The Chung-Shan Awards will become both the important experience and lifelong asset for the winners. He encouraged all winners to aim for higher goals, find their new techniques and expressions, and win the favor of the jury with surprise.
Chairman Chang I-chun of Taiwan Art Gallery Association specially attended the ceremony and praised Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards for establishing the brand. He said they would continue to cooperate with National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and expected the outstanding young artists to lead the industry to a better future.
The competition of “Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” has entered the seventh year this year, encouraging the creative development of the young artists aged from 20 to 45. The competition is divided into three groups: ink painting, calligraphy, and oil painting. A total of 39 winners were selected after the preliminary and secondary reviews, including 13 of the ink painting group, 13 of the calligraphy group, and 13 of the oil painting group. This year, there are three winners of the Chung-Shan Award. They are Song Jin-wei of the ink painting group, Shao Fong-min of the calligraphy group, and Kao Ching-yuan of the oil painting group. Each winner will be given NT$300,000 and one trophy. The second place and third place will respectively win NT$100,000 and NT$50,000. Each group has five honorable mention award winners, and each of them is given NT$10,000. There are 15 winners of the judges’ award, and each will win NT$5,000. The total prize is NT$1,575,000.
“Chung-Shan Youth Art Awards” is the art award with the highest added value in Taiwan. The other incentives include: Besides the exhibition at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the winning and selected works will also be displayed at the traveling exhibitions of Tainan City Xinying Cultural Center and Taichung City Dadun Cultural Center in 2023. Furthermore, the winners of the Chung-Shan Award will join the Art Expo through the collaboration between the hall and Taiwan Art Gallery Association. From this year (2022), the Chung-Shan Award winners will be able to apply to hold personal exhibitions at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall exempt from review. All these are to encourage the young artists to continue to create artworks.
