National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall held the series activity of “2020 Music in Exhibition Space” at Chungshan National Gallery at 2PM on August 22, 2020. Chen You-xun and other twelve students from the string orchestra of Taipei Private Dongshan High School gave the performance of “Holberg Suite, Movement I, III, V” and “Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, Movement II.” Accompanied by the music, the visitors on the scene appreciated “Brilliant Talent: A Commemorative Exhibition of Prof. Wang Chung's Calligraphy Art” and entered the world of Prof. Wang Chung’s calligraphy art.
Last year, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for the first time invited the six schools of the strategic alliance to give eleven music performances at the exhibitions, adding the audio experience to visual art and presenting the diverse looks of visual art. This year, the series activities of “Music in Exhibition Space” were postponed and officially started on August 8, Father’s Day, in accordance with the epidemic preventive measures. The string orchestra of Taipei Private Dongshan High School is the new partner joining in the performance this year (2020). The students expand their performing experience and bring music to every corner of the exhibition space.
Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Liang Yung-fei, said Dongshan High School is a great school with the educational philosophy of “adaptive development,” offering the different learning opportunities and environment and enriching the school societies and teams of various types. In July 1998, “Dongshan Junior High School Orchestra” was established. In 2001, the senior high school orchestra was established. In 2017, the Chinese orchestra was established. Dongshan Orchestra has been established for twenty years and paid attention to the students’ music cultivation. The orchestra has won numerous champions at the music competitions in the past years. Besides participating in the competitions, the students also actively engage in the different performances and activities on and off campus. They were invited to join in “Love of Transplantation Memorial Concert” held by Ministry of Health and Welfare, the 4th Cross-Strait Four Regions Music Festival, and the holiday performance at President Hall and have made international exchanges by performing in Japan for several times in recent years. The partnership with National Taiwan University of Arts also makes the seeds of music education sprout and thrive. We invite the visitors to appreciate the works with eyes and the music with ears and feel the both visual and audio art feast.
In her speech, President of Taipei Private Dongshan High School, Chen Li-mei, said many activities of the orchestra have been cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. She expressed her gratitude to National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for inviting them to be the first school giving the performance for “Music in Exhibition Space.” The orchestra will take part in the competition of Taipei City in two months. However, they have spent time practicing for today’s performance. The students of the orchestra have continued their group practice and joined in the comptetitions from junior high school to senior high school to accumulate experience and sharpen the skills. The students play the musical instruments in their free time, which benefits their body and mind greatly. The students of Dongshan High School do well at the college entrance exam every year, and the orchestra plays a significant part.
From August to December, 2020, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall invites the music societies from the seven schools of the strategic alliance, “String Orchestra of Private Dongshan High School, “String Orchestra of Taipei First Girls High School,” “Chinese Orchestra of Taipei Municipal Guangfu Elementary School,” “String Orchestra of Chingshin Academy,” “String Sextets of Songshan High School of Agriculture and Industry,” and “String Orchestra of Juang Jing Vocational High School” to participate in the activities of “Music in Exhibition Space.” Welcome the art lovers to join actively and enjoy the both visual and audio art feast.
