National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall of Ministry of Culture organizes the event of “Dialogue across Time and Space” to call for creative submissions as a preview for the future launch of public art. The call for submissions was open from January 1 to March 31, 2024, attracting a total of 167 entries. A majority of the works are visual images. There are also a variety of literary works ranging from fiction, prose, poetry, to drama. After the preliminary and secondary review, two winners of the Creative Awards came out: “Prosperity with Nature, Cultural Essence” and “Where Life Is.”
Today is May 18, the International Museum Day. National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall holds a grand awards ceremony, exhibits the winning works, and sets up a gender equality area. The on-site visitors can download free LINE stickers and get the limited-edition postcards. The call for creative submissionss is held for the first time, breaking all limits such as age, nationality, and gender. The jury includes seven experts from inside and outside the hall. They evaluate the works according to the criteria such as originality, local connection, and clear expression of proposals and select the most potential ones so that the hall will become a more diverse cultural and art platform.
These cross-disciplinary works full of diversity are a feast for the eyes. The twenty-eight winning works include two winners of the Creative Awards. Each will be granted a prize of NT$100,000. There are also five Outstanding Awards, three Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Special Awards, six Jury Awards, and twelve Honorable Mention Awards. The works can be divided into the following categories: visual images, multimedia, literary works, and others (public art concept, exhibition curation, game planning proposal, etc.). Besides the exhibition of the winning works, a gender equality area is also set up on site to display eight works related to gender equality and show the modern value of gender equality and Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s thought on fraternity and equality.
Director-general Wang Lan-sheng of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall said the hall is closed for internal renovation. The public art installation project will be launched in the future. This time, the call for submissions is open to the public. National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial hall is an open platform full of warmth and a place where culture and art shine. The public have actively participated in this event. The youngest participant is eleven years old, and the oldest is eighty-two years old. Through the dialogues between different generations and backgrounds, the participating works inspire new thoughts and creative ideas. The winning works can also be the reference for the future installation of public art.
Chief Executive Officer Howard Huang of Foundation for Research on Open Space, Taipei spoke highly of this event. He said he had been expected to see a variety of submissions since the planning of the event. National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall as a very important part in the shared memory of all citizens has accompanied us and been filled with a lot of precious memories. Director Chen Yu-hsiu of Songshan Culture and Creative Park also said the connection between Taipei Dome, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and National Railway Museum would create unlimited energy of cultural creativity for the Eastern District of Taipei in the future. She expected to see the co-prosperity and mutual benefit between this area and the neighborhood.
