“Flourishing in the Afterglow-Exhibition of Calligraphy and Seal Engraving by Hsueh Ping-Nan” The representative works of the past 15 years will be grandly exhibited at Chungshan National Gallery

      “Flourishing in the Afterglow-Exhibition of Calligraphy and Seal Engraving by Hsueh Ping-Nan” organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Ministry of Culture, has been grandly held at Chungshan National Gallery of the hall since May 9. Due to the epidemic COVID-19, the opening ceremony was cancelled, and the number of the visitors to the exhibition will be controlled.

      The calligrapher and seal artist, Prof. Xue Ping-nan, graduated from Taipei Teachers College and National Taiwan Academy of Arts, learning with Prof. Wang Zhuang-wei and Prof. Li Pu-tong. Prof. Xue excels at all five calligraphy scripts. His works have the power of the Bei (stone tablet) school and the grace of the Tie (calligraphy book) school, with the precious characteristic of the integration of calligraphy and seals. His seal script and running and cursive script are well acclaimed by the art circle. He is a master of the seals of Han and other ancient dynasties and “applies calligraphy in the seal carving art,” where grace can be found in strength. According to Prof. Xue, the exhibition is arranged to correspond to the space and mainly focuses on hanging scrolls. The works combine both Bei school and Tie school, seal carving and writing.

      Today is the second week of the exhibition. Prof. Xue Ping-nan invited many of his good friends including the academician of Academia Sinica, TsengYong-Yih, Chairman of Tainan Art Museum, Huang Guang-nan, former deputy director of National Palace Museum, Prof. Lin Bo-ting, chairman of the Mandarin Daily, Jiang Zhu-jun, and famous writer, Liu Yong, to visit the exhibition.

      Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall praised Prof. Xue Ping-nan as the top athlete, who used to win the championship of long jump and decathlon in Category B, National Intercollegiate Athletic Games. He is also an outstanding lifelong educator who used to work as a PE teacher in elementary school, lecturer in National Taiwan Junior College of Arts, professor of Department of Chinese, Shih Hsin University, and professor of Graduate School of Calligraphy Painting Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts. He served as a jury member of Chungshan Literary Award, Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition, and Ming Tsung Award. He is also an outstanding calligraphy and stone artist winning several important awards of the calligraphy and seal carving competitions nationwide, including Chung Hsin Literary Award for calligraphy, National Cultural and Arts Award, and the first prize of seal carving in Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition. He is an envoy of cultural exchange, invited to give lectures and hold exhibitions in the universities in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Beijing for several time. He is a collector with a wide range of collection of seal stone and calligraphy. He is a gourmet and wine taster with special taste for red wine and delicacies. As the academician of Academia Sinica, Zheng Yong-yi, commented on him, “good books, good seals, good tea, good wine, good mountains, good waters, good friend, and good family.”

     Prof. Xue Ping-nan joined the hall’s painting of the great work, “Taiwan Scenery” and left the signature and seal in 2019.   He has engaged in and supported the art events of the hall for years. The hall invites Prof. Xue again this year to hold the personal exhibition “Flourishing in the Afterglow” at Chungshan National Gallery after the sixty-year-anniversary calligraphy exhibition, “Mutual Glow of Calligraphy and Seal Carving,” in 2004. The exhibited works are the representative works during the fifteen years after he was sixty, including 71 calligraphy works in various scripts, 5 seal screens, 112 carved seals, and 19 painting volumes.
