Lin Jin-Jung Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition: A Complete Collection of Clouds and Water of Leisure

     “Clouds and Water of Leisure ─ Lin Jin-jung Solo Exhibition of Calligraphy Art and Ink Painting” organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Ministry of Culture, will be grandly held at Chungshan National Gallery of the hall from December 19, 2020 to January 26, 2021. The opening ceremony took place at 2:30 on December 19. The distinguished guests attending the opening ceremony included President Chen Chih-cheng of NTUA, former President Wang Ming-xian of NTUA, Prof. Su Feng-nan of Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts, NTUA, Prof. Lee Zong-ren of Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts, NTUA, Chair Prof. Liao Shiau-ping of NTNU, Honorary Prof. Jiang Ming-xian of NTNU, famous ink artists Prof. Ou Hao-nien, Honorary Chairman of Central Taiwan Fine Arts Association, Prof. Ni Chao-lung, and Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng.

     The famous calligrapher and painter, Prof. Lin Jin-jung, is the present honorary professor of NTUA as well as the adjunct professor of the graduate program of Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts. He used to serve as the professor of NTUA, Chair of Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts, Dean of Fine Art College, and Vice President and has dedicated to calligraphy and painting creation and research on art history and theories for years. His works won the art awards including National Army Arts and Literature Gold Lion Award, Zhongxing Arts and Culture Award, and Zhongshan Arts Award. His painting focuses on the understanding and observation of life. With the diverse creative topics and abundant artistic conception, the works range from landscape, flowers and birds, figures, animals and even to cityscape. Whatever in common in daily life can be taken as the creative topics. With the unity of form and spirit, his works are innovative, especially the buffalo paintings. In calligraphy, he excels in
all scripts. The strokes are full of strength as the brushes are wielded freely. He also makes a deep research on the characters on the unearthed bamboo and silk documents in the Qin country and Chu country in the Warring States Period and integrates it into his calligraphy art. Besides the achievement in the creation of calligraphy and painting, he has engaged in art education for years and had great influence on the students. His students have great achievements in the art circle and contribute a lot to art heritage.

      Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, said Prof. Lin is a humble and humorous person with the well-recognized achievement in calligraphy and painting. With the essential collection in Prof. Lin’s creative career, the exhibition completely presents all types of Prof. Lin’s artistic creation. The animals such as buffalos and tigers in the works have the vivid and intriguing eyes that seem to be able to communicate with people’s mind. Besides ink painting, Prof. Lin could rattle off the sources and development of Chinese characters. Both his academic research on calligraphy and the personal achievement in creative characters can be seen in this exhibition.

      Prof. Lin Jin-jung said the title of the exhibition, “Clouds and Water of Leisure,” suggests the past like floating clouds as well as the records of life. He humbly said he started to learn calligraphy because he was worried that his poor writing would affect teaching and therefore kept making progress. As for the learning of Chinese painting, he expressed his gratitude to Prof. Zhen Ming when he studied in Provincial Chiayi Teachers’ School for the encouragement and praise, which inspired him with the energy to keep learning and creating and made him fall in love with calligraphy and painting.

      The exhibition includes Prof. Lin’s 132 selected works of ink and calligraphy in the different stages. There are 68 works of ink ainting and 64 works of calligraphy.
