National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Holds 2021 Chungshan Youth Academic Conference

The opening ceremony of “2021 Chungshan Youth Academic Conference,” organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and Sun Yat Sen Academic and Cultural Foundation and co-organized by College of Social Sciences of National Cheng Chi University and College of Social Sciences of Chinese Culture University, was grandly held at International Conference Room, 5th floor, General Building of National Chengchi University at 9AM today (Oct. 15). The conference titled “Sunology Revisited: Ethnicity, Governance, and Development Under Globalization” was attended by nearly hundred people including the domestic scholars and experts, young scholars, and PhD and MA students. The teachers and students from Graduate Institute of Development Studies of NCCU and Graduate Institute of National Development and Mainland China Studies of PCCU also enthusiastically attended and assisted with the conference. Besides commemorating Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s contribution to the founding of the Republic of China, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall continues to hold “The 3rd Chungshan Youth Academic Conference” to encourage the young scholars of the new generation in Taiwan to engage in academic inheritance and research innovation. During the critical period of epidemic prevention, all attendees of the conference abided by the guidelines of CDC, keeping proper social distancing and wearing a mask all the time.

Vice President of NCCU, Chao Yi, gave a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. He expressed his delight to see many young scholars engage in the academic conference with not only diverse and innovative topics but also great contents and his expectation that Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s thought will become a bridge to enhance peace and unity of all Chinese people in the world.

On behalf of the organizer, Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, said this is an academic conference exclusively for young scholars. It is especially meaningful to be held at NCCU this year. National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall’s purpose of holding the youth academic conference is to take root on campus, expand academic engagement, create the research platform, and encourage the young scholars in Taiwan to deepen academic research and inheritance. It is expected that more young scholars will join the academic exchanges and present the latest academic research results at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Through the academic research platform of the conference, the hall hopes to further promote the outstanding young scholars in Taiwan and provide them with the overseas academic exchanges and learning opportunities in the future.

Vice Chairman of Sun Yat Sen Academic and Cultural Foundation, Lin Chen-kuo, also made an appeal to people at home and abroad to pass on and promote the timeless thought of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. To encourage and cultivate the young scholars to engage in the research on Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s thought, the foundation will start to award Chungshan Youth Scholarships next year.

This time, Chungshan Youth Academic Conference includes the paper presentations of 15 young scholars, Lin Yi-chen, Xu Ya-feng, Chen Fang-qian, Lin Zi-chao, Liu Guo-yi, Wang Yun-bo, Zhang Zi-lin, Liao Yan-hao, Shen Yi-wen, Huang Shang-bin, Hong Yao-nan, Bai bang-ting, Xiao Du-huan, Lin Yu-ren, and Li Ling-feng. The conference also invites Distinguished Professor of Institute of Political Science, National Sun Yat-sen University, Liao Da-chi, to give the keynote speech: “Preemptive Preparation: The Contention and Imagination about ‘Civil Rights’ in the Principle of Democracy.” The theme of the conference, “Ethnicity, Governance, and Development under Globalization” further manifests the hall’s research on Sunology. Besides the continual concern for the overall national development of Taiwan based on the various issues Taiwan encounters, the important issues including the ethnic conflict, crisis governance, and regional development and innovation under globalization will further be discussed.

By following Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s spirit of “fraternity” and concept of “the world for all people,” the hall has kept organizing a series of academic conferences. Last November, the international academic conference of “2020 In Memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen: The World is for All People and The World is United” was organized to enhance the academic and cultural exchanges with Japan and new southbound nations. After the epidemic slows down this year, the hall further plans several academic events in celebration of the 110th anniversary of Xinhai Revolution. Director-general Wang Lan-sheng expressed his hope that young students will attend these events. He believes that Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s thought and deeds in life can be the role model for young students. It is expected that this conference where the senior professors, young scholars, and PhD and MA students gather together will promote the young generation’s academic inheritance and innovative research on the one hand and bring the brand new academic results and diverse perspectives to the Sunology research of the hall.
