Breaking Through and Growing Up “Lu Chiung-hui Pastel/Oil Painting Solo Exhibition” at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Breaking Through and Growing Up—Lu Chiung-hui Pastel/Oil Painting Solo Exhibition, organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Ministry of Culture, will be grandly held at De-ming Gallery of the hall from January 6 to 24. The opening ceremony was held at De-ming Gallery at 2:30PM today (January 9).


Lu Chiung-hui graduated from Department of Arts and Craft of Fu Hsin Trade & Art School. Since childhood, she has been seriously physically disabled because of polio. The sufferings of the body and physical disability in life seem to make every step full of obstacles. However, all these enrich her life and nourish her painting, which is loyally presented in every of her works. She said, Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. This quotation from Psalm is the truthful portrayal of her life.


      The exhibition includes 29 works. The title “Breaking Through” comes from the painter’s intuition that she has broken through the dilemmas despite her limitation. She may look weak; however, she has the bold spirit and painting style. The viewers will see the tenacity of life and feel the soft heart of the female artist. Ms. Lu’s works show the perseverance of a female artist never succumbing to the tests in life, encouraging everyone to actively engage in art expression. The exhibited work, “Great Wisdom, Great Harvest-Taiwan Jinshan Sulfuric Fire Fishing” presents the special fishing way, “sulfuric fire fishing,” in Jinshan and reveals the fishermen’s energy of working hard for life as the artists shows her resourceful creative power. From the figures’ facial expressions and looks, we can deeply feel Ms. Lu’s splendid depiction of the joy and tests in life.


      Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, said Mr. Lu displays the glory of life on the canvases through oil painting and pastel pigments. The works include scenery, flowers, and figures. Among them, we can read the joy and peace in life as well as the vitality in the circle of nature. The exhibition is an example of cultural equal right promoted by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Ms. Lu is not an academic painter, but she still shows the abundant creative energy through personal hard work. We encourage such works to be presented in front of us and welcome everyone to visit the hall to enjoy the power of life brought by Ms. Lu.


The pastel abecedarian of Lu, Mr. Chen Bin-nan, said instead of focusing on how to complete the images in the paintings in class, Lu explored how to apply pastel well. After only 4 classes, her artistic cells were completely vitalized. Despite the physical disability, she is like an unbridled wild horse creating the awesome works one after another and attracting every viewers eyes. This is what a born artist is.
