Press Release

To enrich the public’s diversified vision and open the public’s imagination for the art and cultural creativity, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Ministry of Culture, holds the “culture lecture” for June, 2019, and specially invites the former dean of School of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts, Prof. Lin Chang-hu, to talk about “Freedom and Diversity: Cross-Century Ink Painting Appreciation” at the lecture hall at 2:30 PM on June 1. Welcome those interested in ink painting to join us.

Good at ink painting, calligraphy, and poetry, Prof. Lin is both creative and academic. At present a starting member of Taiwan Academy of Fine Arts, he used to serve as the visiting professor at National College of Art and Design, Ireland, and Dongguk University, Korea. He also taught the creative theories at the MA and PhD programs at Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University, having the rich educational background and experience. His calligraphy and painting works are both collected by the museums of fine arts at home and abroad, and he was given many awards including National Cultural and Arts Award, Creative Literature and Arts Awards of Ministry of Education, Wu Zuoren International Art Award, and the gold award of The Art Society of China.

Prof. Lin Chang-hu believes it is the right path to understand the dimensions of the contemporary avant-garde ink art first when facing the creative obstacles ahead and to find the proper solutions by knowing how. Any art transformation does not have the absolute way; instead, it only responds to all kinds of conditions. In his opinion, the true meaning of contemporary ink painting is diversity and freedom, crossing time and space. Ink painting, calligraphy, design, materials, installation, and even western art all converse with each other, creating a totally different phenomenon.

In the lecture, Prof. Lin makes the works of the contemporary famous ink painters the examples, giving the brief overview of the contemporary concepts and styles and sharing the various creative characteristics of the contemporary ink painters to understand the fundamental causes of the transformation. The cross-generational dimensions and issues of contemporary ink painting are introduced, which reflects an important afterthought of his long-term mutual supportive art creation and academic research. Based on the standpoint of contemporary diversity and freedom, it is hoped that through the opportunity of open interaction, the conversation between the different fields in contemporary art will be started. The lecture is informative with great contents. We welcome your participation.
