“Never Give Up• In Memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Spirit”: Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s 96th Death Anniversary Series Activities “Taiwan Charm”: Milestone of Taiwan’s Contemporary Ink History

Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s death anniversary is also the annual Arbor Day. National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall practices the ideas of “fraternity” and “equal right” in the series activities of the hall. This year, a series of diverse activities featuring “Never Give Up, In Memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Spirit” will be held, including sapling giving, volunteer chorus performance, dance performance by the dancers with disabilities, great painting unveiling ceremony, and book giving. We invite the citizens to practice the spirit of fraternity and equal right together in daily life.

There will be four activities today (Mar 12). At 9AM, the sapling giving activity “Create Green Life Together” will be held on the west plaza of the hall, giving the citizens more than 1,500 saplings of osmanthus, azalea, and camellia to express the hall’s emphasis on greenness, energy conservation and carbon reduction. It is expected to create the happy and comfortable green life with the citizens. At the same time, “Pay Tribute to Dr. Sun Yat-sen” will be held at the hall. Welcome to the public from all walks of like to pay a floral tribute to the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

The activity of “Never Give Up, In Memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Spirit” will be held at 3PM today. First, the volunteer chorus of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall will sing “The Gift of Love.” Then, the first dance troupe composed of dancers with disabilities in Taiwan, “Bird and Water Dance Ensemble,” will perform “Dance the Light of Life.” The dance of “imperfection” interprets “perfection” and presents the courage to pursue dreams and the spirit to face life with a positive attitude when encountering frustrations and difficulties in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who pursued his ideal of revolution, devoted his life, and never gave up for life.

The next grand event will be the unveiling ceremony of the great ink painting “Taiwan Charm.” To promote the heritage and development of eastern calligraphy and painting art, the hall specially invited ten important contemporary ink artists to co-paint the huge ink work featuring the landscape of Taiwan. The participating artists include Liang Shiou-chung, Jiang Ming-xian, Huang Guang-nan, Lin Chang-de, Luo Zhen-xian, Tsai You, Chang Shen-hsi, Chiu Ting-fu, Lin Chang-hu, and Huang Tsai-sung.

Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, said the hall has long been the cultural landscape in Taiwan. The works on the walls of the hall are also the rich cultural assets. With the increasing calligraphy and painting artists in Taiwan and the progress of time, the hall presents the co-painted great work “Taiwan Charm” today after the flower and bird painting, “Taiwan Scenery,” in 2019, both of which promoted by the former Director-general Liang. Besides exhibiting the creative contents and skills of the contemporary painters, the work is also full of the cultural spirit, selfless devotion, and humble character and attitude of the senior painters. It is meaningful that National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall provides the creative platform. Like “Qian(Humble) Hexagram” in Book of Changes (I Ching), it means auspicious. The senior painters have their own specialties, but they are willing to cooperate with each other, show their modesty, and present their specialty selflessly in the painting. It is also the manifestation of “Qian Hexagram,” “No leaders in a host of dragons, good.” The members in a group cooperate with each other harmoniously and exert their individual functions without the need for a leader. Besides, the sunrise in the mountains of the great work also symbolizes prosperity of Taiwan in 2021 and an early end to the pandemic.

One of the conveners of the great painting, Prof. Lin Chang-hu, said it took about three months to complete the great work of “Taiwan Charm.” With a sense of mission, the ten painters participated in the co-painting and united to complete a perfect landscape work by integrating the different painting styles. It is an unprecedented achievement featuring the landscape of Taiwan and a collection of the academic ink painting styles in Taiwan. This is the hall’s positive action with the social and educational meaning in promoting culture and art. At the same time, it also sets up another milestone for Taiwan’s contemporary ink history.

“Taiwan Charm” is co-created by the contemporary artists with the outstanding achievements in art. Featuring the charm of Taiwan, the work depicts the beautiful landscape of Taiwan including Lala Mountain, Nanhu Mountain, and Qilai Mountain. After several adjustments of the draft, the participating artists reached the consensus, and each of them selected his part to paint. The different mountains have the different scenes for the artists to show their styles. The diverse skills can be seen in the same painting. The last ink wash is applied to harmonize the tone and the image and maintain each artist’s strokes, styles, and characteristics. It is a rare and precious work.

National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall will also hold the book giving activity on March 19 and give more than thousand painting volumes and research books on Sunology for free. “Guided Tours to Wang Da-hong’s Historic Buildings” will be held on March 27 and 28. Welcome to join us.
