Depicting Taiwan: 2021 Traveling Exhibition of the Collection from National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

“Depicting Taiwan: 2021 Traveling Exhibition of the Collection from National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall,” co-organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Ministry of Culture, and National Taitung Living Art Center, will be held at the main exhibition room of National Taitung Living Art Center from April 10 to May 3. The opening ceremony was held at the exhibition room at 10:30AM today (Apr 10).

The first stop of “Depicting Taiwan: 2021 Traveling Exhibition of the Collection from National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall” is Taitung County, where one-third of the population is from six indigenous tribes among the indigenous peoples in Taiwan. As a cultural melting pot of the tribes, the county has the unique culture of inclusiveness. With the natural topographic protection, it is like Xanadu aloof from the world with the superior natural landscape and cultural resources.

Director of National Taitung Living Art Center, Li Ji-chong, welcomes National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall to bring many splendid works to the exhibition in Taitung and expects to build the mechanism of exchange and cooperation in the future so that the artists in Taitung will also have the chance to hold exhibitions in Taipei.

Chief of Exhibition Planning Division, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Yang De-sheng, attended the opening ceremony on behalf of the hall, saying the hall has kept holding the traveling exhibitions in counties and cities of Taiwan to promote cultural heritage, share aesthetics, and at the same time vitalize the collected artworks. This time, the exhibition in Taitung has three major categories: First are the works with the important connection to Taitung. Second are those featuring the hall, “Beauty of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.” Third are “Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mottos: Beauty of Calligraphy.” There are 32 selected works of collection exhibited in total.

Former Dean of College of Humanities, National Taitung University, Prof. Lin Yung-fa, said he was glad to see the traveling exhibition of the collection from National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall held in Taitung. All of the artists of the exhibited works are the famous ones with achievements in Taiwan, including Lee Chi-mao, Ho Chao-chu, and Chou Cheng. The works are in the different forms of ink, calligraphy, watercolor, and oil painting. He recommends the art lovers in Taitung to grasp the chance and visit the exhibition.

The exhibition combines the local culture and charm and specially includes the works of the three artists connected with Taitung, Lee Chi-mao, Lin Yung-fa, and Sheng Zhen.

Prof. Lee Chi-mao, the ink master famous at home and abroad, started his connection with Taitung in 1957 and frequently traveled between Taipei and Taitung for the cultural and art events in Taitung. To express the gratitude to Mr. Lee for his hard work and deep affection for Taitung, the county government awarded “Taitung Honorary Citizenship” to the master in 2003. His work “Gallop” is exhibited this time. The picture seems to be dark, but it is actually composed of the layered ink strokes to present the momentum of tens of thousands of horses galloping.

Prof. Lin Yung-fa was born in Beinan Township, Taiyung County. Used to be Director of Taitung County Government Bureau of Cultural Affairs and Director of National Taitung Living Art Center, he loves natural landscape. Two collected works, “City of Sunrise” and “Scenery of Yangmingshan,” are exhibited this time. With the base of traditional ink techniques and expressive strokes, he depicts the exclusive magnificence and tranquility of the mountains and sea in Hualien and Taitung and presents the beauty of Chungshan Hall through the atmosphere surrounded by mountains and forest greenness.

Prof. Sheng Zhen was born in Taitung. With the attitude of lifelong learning, he studied in the US and Australia for the art related master’s and doctorate degrees after serving in the military for nearly 20 years and retiring as a colonel. In the work “Xanadu” exhibited this time, the forest which occupies almost all the picture leads to the visual focus of Chungshan Hall on the upper right corner to create the Xanadu atmosphere aloof from the world after the dense forest. It is also what Xanadu is like in the artist’s mind.

The exhibition invites the citizens to enjoy the art feast with the abundant content together.
