“2020 Chungshan Youth Art Award Traveling Exhibition,” co-organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and Penghu County Government, will be held at Hung Ken-shen Art Museum in Penghu from today. There are 24 selected works in total including the first three places and honorable mention awards from the three groups of ink art, calligraphy, and oil painting. Today (April 17) the opening ceremony as well as the two activities, “2021 Cross-Generation Artists Symposium” and “Guided Concert” is specially held.
Penghu County Magistrate, Lai Feng-wei, said Penghu is a city with rich culture and history. With long culture and history, Hung Ken-shen Art Museum used to be the office of a Navy deputy general of Patrol and Inspection Department, Taiwan Prefecture, in Qing Dynasty and then “Penghu County Military Police Squad” in the Japanese-ruling period. It is also the important base of the ink development in Taiwan. The development of art requires promotion. He expressed his gratitude to National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for bringing the outstanding works of the young artists this time and hoped to have more chances to cooperate with the memorial hall so that the outstanding artists in Penghu will be able to hold exhibitions in Taipei and the art development of Penghu will therefore be upgraded.
Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, said the hall has been paying attention to the cultivation of young talents. Besides providing the high prize money for encouragement, “Chungshan Youth Art Award” also focuses on the further promotions by exhibiting the young artists’ works in the different places. Starting from Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the traveling exhibitions have been held in Changhua, Kaohsiung, and Penghu so that the great works will be appreciated by the citizens all over Taiwan. By increasing the young artists’ exposure, their works will be promoted to the market. In this way, their creation will be supported, invested, and collected by the art lovers, and the young artists can continue to create new works for a long time. Director-general Wang Lan-sheng expects to keep the good cooperation with Penghu County Government in the future to cultivate the outstanding young artists.
Supporting the young artists to engage in art creation and contributing to the cultivation of young talents are the basic work to promote art development. The competition of “Chungshan Youth Art Award” is the important business of Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. The award encourages the young artists aged from 20 to 45 to engage in creation and development. It has been held for five times since 2016. The Chungshan Award winners this year are Chen Shi-hang for the ink art group, Chen Zhao-kun for the calligraphy group, and Yang You-sheng for the oil painting group. Each winner is given NT$300,000 and one trophy.
In his speech, the judge representative of this year, Prof. Su Hsien-fa, said he was the oil painting first prize winner in the College Fine Arts Department Group of “National Youth Students Calligraphy and Painting Competition,” the predecessor of “Chungshan Youth Art Award,” so he has the deep connection with Chungshan Youth Art Award. He encouraged the young artists to insist on the ideal and continue to create works.
The Chungshan Award winner for the ink art group, Chen Shi-hang, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for providing the high prize money, supporting him to focus on creation without having to face the social torrents right after retiring from military service.
“2021 Cross-Generation Artists Symposium” specially invites Chairman of Tainan Art Museum, Prof. Su Hsien-fa, Prof. Hong Gen-shen of National Kaohsiung Normal University, and the Chungshan Award winner for the ink art group, Chen Shi-hang to have a conversation between the artists of the different generations. It is expected to share with the public the cross-generation art views and creative differences through the symposium and the response to the new era in engaging in art creation. “Guided Concert” invites the members of National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO) to guide the participants to the works. By “reading” the winning works and creative discourses, the guided concert will feature the key concept of cross-sensory art and be accompanied by the appropriate music. The participants will appreciate visual art through not only the artists’ written introduction but also the arranged music and enjoy the art atmosphere both as viewers and as audience.
