National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Art Collection Exhibitions Highlight Cultural Heritage and Aesthetic Sharing

“2020 National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Art Collection Exhibitions,” organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Ministry of Culture, will take place at Wen-hua Gallery on the second floor from July 31 to August 11 and at east and west Culture Gallery on the second floor from July 31 to September 10. The opening ceremony started with the beautiful music played by the string quartet of NTSO Youth Orchestra. The attending distinguished guests included Prof. Du Zhong-Gao of NTNU, former dean of College of Arts, NTNU, Liang Siou-jhong, Prof. Chang Ko-chi of Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts, NTUA, Dean Huang Zhi-yang of College of Art and Design, Huafan University, and Prof. Bai Zong-ren of Department of Industrial and Commercial Design, Oriental Institute of Technology.

In his speech, Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Liang Yung-fei, first expressed his feelings for the exhibition. After the Nationalist Government came to Taiwan in 1949, the ink, calligraphy, and western painting artists also left their hometown and moved to the land of Taiwan, working hard together with the local artists for the art culture in Taiwan and achieving the fruitful outcome of today’s art development in Taiwan. They engaged in the teaching service in Taiwan together, and further combined, integrated, and inherited the Taiwanese culture. Director-general Liang specially made the appeal that the citizens should cherish the unique creative process of the Taiwanese art culture more as it is not only exclusive in the world but also exclusive in Asia in terms of the varieties and innovations.

Director-general Liang also mentioned his gratitude to Mr. Huang Lei-sheng and Mr. Lee Chi-mao. The artists worked hard and devoted themselves to the land of Taiwan, enriching the art culture in Taiwan as well as the citizens’ contents of aesthetic sharing. For the public sectors, it is even more important to cherish and actively promote it. Therefore, after Director-general Liang took office, he has actively worked with Ministry of Culture in enforcing the policies and conducting the comprehensive digitalization of the collection. According to him, besides the static research, the collection needs further dynamic value-adding revitalization. Take 2019 for example. National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall held the traveling exhibitions respectively in Taoyuan City, Chiayi City, and Tainan City. In the process of curation, the local artists’ works were specially selected and exhibited after restoration, which not only connected the local feelings but also got the collection of the hall closer to the citizens of other counties and cities. This year, besides Changhua and Miaoli, the traveling exhibition is also planned to be held in Pingtung in September. These are to expand the value of the artists’ lifelong devotion to creation, share art aesthetics, and trace the culture so that the marginal benefit of the collection will be maximized. It is also expected that the traveling exhibitions will arouse the local and central governments’ emphasis on the development of aesthetics.

Director-general also mentioned two specialties of the exhibition: 1. The exhibited works ranging from Mr. Ding Yu-shi’s “Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Words” in 1965 to Mr. Wu Qi-lin’s “Cen Sen Feng Ru Jing Shi” in 2019 span 54 years, including ink painting, calligraphy, western painting, and watercolor with abundant contents and diverse forms. 2. The inheritance can be seen in the exhibits. Wu Qi-lin is the winner of Chungshan Youth Art Award and follows Mr. Xiao Shi-qiong, who follows Mr. Du Zhong-gao. It is rare for the exhibition to present both artists’ calligraphy works at the same time, and it can be regarded as the best model for art inheritance and innovation.

To actively revitalize the collection, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall held the exhibition of the female artists’ artworks from the hall’s collection at Wen-hua Gallery earlier this year. In the future, the hall will continue to bring the collection exhibitions to the different counties and cities all over Taiwan. In the interdisciplinary value-adding program, the design of constant temperature and humidity is specially planned for Chungshan National Gallery and Bo-ai Gallery in order to provide the better exhibition space.

“2020 National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Art Collection Exhibitions” will present 43 selected works from the collection. We invite the public to enjoy the art feast with the abundant content together.
