Director-general Wang Lan-sheng of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall said today was not only the opening ceremony of “Lingering—Huang Tsai-lang Solo Exhibition” but also the heavyweight reunion of the world of culture and art. Many famous artists gathered together, and the joyful and warm atmosphere prevailed. Everyone has the different perspectives in life. It is commendable that a man can exert his work to the fullest, dedicate himself wholeheartedly to the cultural development of the society and the country, make achievements, and continue to develop his own interest in life. Director Huang is such an outstanding person. In his works, it can be found that he has his unique views on things and presents them with brushes. Director-general Wang is happy that National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall can hold the first solo exhibition for Director Huang and sincerely welcomes the art lovers to visit the exhibition.

Political Deputy Minister of Culture Su Wang said the grand occasion today could prove Director Huang’s achievement in life. Director Huang made the unrivaled record of serving as the director of four art museums in the field of art administration. In 2008, he planned the exhibition of the MIT project at ART TAIPEI. His long-term cultivation in art administration and education makes the overall art creation, industry, and environment livelier. This exhibition makes us feel lucky that “Director Huang can be returned to art creation.” In this way, we can see his creations full of the depth and experience of life.

Former Minister Chiu Kun-liang of Council for Cultural Affairs described today’s event as the unprecedentedly grand occasion like the “festival” in the world of art and culture. It is rare that many seniors can gather together. As a painter, Director Huang decided to engage in art administration, contributing his professional knowledge to the country and assisting with the promotion of the art and cultural industry, which is not an easy task. Minister Chiu expressed his gratitude to Director Huang for his dedication to the art environment of Taiwan.

Director Hsiao Tsung-huang of National Palace Museum said Director Huang had been his first superior when he first entered public service. He detailed the projects and events he promoted together with Director Huang during the period of Council for Cultural Affairs, including “Nian Dai Art Exhibition,” “Retrospective Exhibition of Art Development in Taiwan,” and “Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting in the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Taiwan” and thanked him for the guidance through the difficulties in life. The friendship with him like both a teacher and a friend was beyond words. Director Huang used to serve as the Director of Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Director of Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the Director of Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Director of National Taiwan Museum. His dedication and contribution to the art development in Taiwan is obvious to all.

Former Minister of Education Wu Ching-ji said that, as a senior high school classmate of Huang, he had been proud of his achievements in public service and art. He praised his contribution to the promotion of art education and his participation in the compilation of the dictionary of western art, which was the precious data of art in Taiwan. Tainan City Deputy Mayor Yeh Tse-shan expressed his gratitude to Director Huang for his support and promotion of local culture, especially assisting the local governments in establishing the cultural centers (today’s Department of Cultural Affairs) so that the local and central governments could promote the cultural affairs together. In these years, the local culture has developed prosperously, and the art and cultural ecology and environment in Taiwan have become more complete. Thank Director Huang for his dedication. Director Liao Ren-yi of National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts also expressed his gratitude to Director Huang for establishing the solid foundation for facilities and systems during his term of office at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Next, Director Huang will also hold an exhibition at NTMFA, which will discuss an art administrator’s contribution to the society from the angle of art history. It is believed that the exhibition will be a great one to look forward to.

The artist Huang Tsai-lang said painting has been his lifelong career. After work in the busy public service career, he could only use the limited rest time to create works. He often got up again after going to bed in the deep night and picked up the brushes to paint, which was hard work. However, by examining his works, he would think of the “knowing works” mentioned by Mr. Li Mei-shu and elevate his spirit, especially through the implementation of personal thought and will with brushes. Besides, the found beauty of natural order and the innovative brushwork presented in paintings will bring the happiness of “knowing works.” This is the reason why he keeps creating works without feeling tired.

According to National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Huang Tsai-lang is an artist full of enthusiasm and broad ideal. From chief editor of arts, division chief, department director, to director-general of local and national museum of fine arts, he has been dedicated to art administration and the promotion of art education for years. At the same time, he also diligently buries himself in the art of painting. He has both the background of art creation and the expertise in art administration, especially his great contribution to the establishment of art administration in Taiwan, but his paintings are rarely published.

In the early years, Huang used to learn sketching from the senior artist, Kuo Po-chuan. In the strict and solid training process, he cultivated his unique strokes and temperament. The exhibition selects nearly hundred works of sketching, watercolor, and oil painting in the different periods from the 1970s to the present. The subjects include: the orange series, the pothos series, the public affairs series, the narcissus series, the reed series, the lily series, the human body series, the self-portrait series, and the sugarcane garden series. A total of 94 works is exhibited. There are the representative works such as “Jiali Church (1971),” “Old Wall of Dihua Street (1972),” “Chenggong Ling Range (1973),” and “Fallen Leaves in Autumn (1980).” We can see Huang’s freehand depiction of the real scenes in his early works, where the brushwork full of the charm of thickness and strength attempts to pursue the simple beauty in traditional aesthetics and the elegant style in the pictures.
