“The Perception of Mountains-Cheng Tai-le Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition,” organized by National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall of Ministry of Culture will be held at Chungshan National Gallery from today to June 15. The opening ceremony was held today (April 16). The exhibition mainly includes Prof. Cheng’s new works in recent years. The 72 selected works of calligraphy and painting show his style gradually returning to the spirit of Oriental art and his original love for ink painting. Besides, the amazing large works created with enamel are also exhibited to enlarge the visual effect of calligraphy art.
On behalf of Minister Lee Yung-te, Political Deputy Minister of Culture, Hsiao Tsung-huang, expressed the respect for Prof. Cheng Tai-le. Lee pointed out that Prof. Cheng’s works often inspired from the contemporary social phenomenon and daily life seek innovations and varieties in terms of style and space arrangement, showing the unique style of ink use in calligraphy and painting. With the solid training and foundation of traditional theory, he seeks the interpretation and creation of modern style and actively explores the new path for traditional calligraphy and painting. After years of experience and practice of the eastern and western visual art, Prof. Cheng’s style in recent years has gradually combined complexity and simplicity and evolved into the new creative style of returning to the Oriental art spirit, which corresponds to “The Perception of Mountains,” the title of the exhibition worth savoring.
Director-general of National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Wang Lan-sheng, said “The Perception of Mountains” is the return to self-cultivation in Chan Buddhism and the real display of self-consciousness. The exhibition has not only the Buddhist Chan but also the Taoist spirit. For example, the large enamel work as the key vision at the south room of Changshan Gallery adopts the innovative medium and the content of ancient wisdom (Chapter One and Two of Lao Zi’s Dao De Jing). The eight scrolls of calligraphy on the main wall of the north room are Zhuangzi’s The Secret of Caring for Life. Besides, the art commentaries and artist’s personal statement in the exhibition album are great inspirations after reading. This is a splendid exhibition of inner world. In his speech, Prof. Cheng Tai-le said it is the new attempt and challenge to create the two large works of the exhibition focus with enamel. By writing Zhaungzi’s works in Chu characters, he overcame the difficulty of philology for years. At the same time, he mentioned plenty of preparations before the exhibition at Chungshan National Gallery. For him, it was the unprecedented hard work. He also expressed the gratitude to many good friends for their assistance.
Prof. Cheng Tai-le was born in Taipei City in 1957. He served as Chair of Department of Fine Arts, NTNU, and the judge of major fine arts exhibitions. He won Jhung Hsing Culture and Art Award (Calligraphy Group) and the first place of the calligraphy group at National Fine Arts Exhibition, engaging in fine arts education and the creation of calligraphy and painting for over forty years. The exhibition “Perception of Mountains” records Prof. Cheng’s creative process in recent years. In terms of contents and forms, theories have been gradually set aside as the simple fun of using brushes and ink is recalled to find the original love for ink painting. The calligraphy works extend the style of caring about social phenomenon and making political allegories to keep up with the pulsation of time. It is noteworthy that the two large works become the two highlights attracting the viewers’ eyes as “Chapter One and Two of Lao Zi’s Dao De Jing” with the total length of 26 meters presents the astonishing thickness of ink color and the eight-scroll calligraphy works “Zhuangzi’s The Secret of Caring for Life” are written in Chu characters with strength and vigor in each stroke.
